Traditional hierarchical company structures, modeled after Roman legions, are becoming obsolete as AI enables the creation of recursive, self-improving organizational loops. By making every aspect of a company "legible"—recording all communications, meetings, and data—organizations can build a "company brain" that continuously optimizes workflows, updates internal documentation, and generates on-demand software. This shift prioritizes token usage over headcount, effectively eliminating the need for traditional middle management. Instead of manual oversight, AI agents handle monitoring, quality control, and deployment, allowing systems to improve autonomously. Humans should transition to roles at the edge of these systems, focusing on high-stakes, novel, or emotionally complex situations where AI cannot yet operate. Ultimately, companies should be built as ephemeral, AI-driven entities where business context and domain knowledge serve as the primary, enduring assets.
