Embodied AI represents a transition toward general-purpose foundation models capable of controlling diverse robotic forms. Nvidia’s Project Groot aims to build an AI brain for humanoid robots by integrating internet-scale data, synthetic simulation data, and real-world teleoperation. This strategy mirrors the evolution in natural language processing from task-specific models to generalists. Achieving a "GPT-3 moment" for robotics requires mastering low-level motor control—System 1—while integrating it with high-level reasoning—System 2. Simulation is critical to this process, as tools like Isaac Sim allow for infinite data generation and domain randomization, effectively bridging the sim-to-real gap. By leveraging human-centric data and hardware, these models aim to enable robots to perform complex tasks like household chores, moving toward a future where autonomous, intelligent robots are as ubiquitous as smartphones.
